Plant Something Weekend: June 22nd-24th

Join Us for Planting and More

Plant Something Weekend is a celebration of everything our campaign stands for: environmental sustainability, personal health, and vibrant communities. Here in Maine, we’re on a mission to move more, fight common diseases, and incorporate physical activity into our everyday life. Gardening — everything from digging a hole to weeding — is the ideal exercise to get the heart pumping. Gardening helps maintain a healthy weight, and does wonders for mental health. It’s calming, and it has been found to reduce stress, improve mood, and support brain health as we age. Those who plant have improved nutrition as well, and tend to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Planting something involves more than just pretty blooms. Adding vegetation around your home can reduce storm runoff, remove carbon dioxide from the air, decrease pollutants from the air and soil, and preserve the natural environment for wildlife, birds, and valuable insects. Every time you buy plants and supplies from your neighborhood garden center or hire a nearby landscaper you are investing in the local economy. You are taking part in providing jobs and supporting local businesses. When you shop at independent retailers, spending money close to home, those dollars go back into your community. And, when you shop locally, you enjoy diverse choices that represent the local character and its values.

Join the Festivities!

Your local garden centers will be hosting special activities to celebrate Plant Something Weekend:

Estabrook’s in Yarmouth: Your children can take part in a scavenger hunt to win a special prize. On Saturday, 107.5 Frank FM will be broadcasting live on location, and on Sunday you can enjoy a tasty lunch from the NOM BAI food truck.

Plants Unlimited will be celebrating their 40th anniversary with special sales, and they will be presenting a lecture on pollinators and local plants. Also check out the food trucks!

Robin’s Flower Pot will have 25% off all trees during Plant Something Weekend.

O’Donal’s Nursery will be showcasing their new geothermal greenhouse. This 5000 square foot greenhouse features geothermal heat pumps, twin wall polycarbonate panels, thermal curtains and radiant floor tubing. Come learn about this energy efficient technology with Dave Leonard of Evergeen Geothermal, and enjoy their beautiful nursery in full bloom!

Fieldstone Gardens is having their Annual Open House on Sunday, June 24, from 9-5pm. Gardens tours will be provided throughout the day with experts on hand to answer questions. The gardens will be bursting with many beautiful flowers. There will be hourly door prize drawings as well as other open house specials. They will be serving thirst-quenching iced tea, lemonade, and goodies from Hillman’s Bakery.
