Behind the Scenes of the Maine Flower Show

Forcing Flowers is a Tricky Business

Spring is fast approaching! The milder temperatures and longer days are reminders that winter will soon be ending. In anticipation of our second annual Maine Flower Show, we thought it might be interesting to show you the work that goes into forcing the plants and bulbs. It takes a lot of work, much more than most people realize. Forcing plants and flowers to bloom and leaf out in the depth of winter is quite a tricky science.

To explain this process, we went to Cozy Acres Greenhouses in Yarmouth, Maine, and spoke with Jeffrey Marstaller. He explains which plants need to be in a hot-house, warm-house or cold-house. Sometimes they have to be moved back and forth, depending on the outdoor conditions and the progression of the plants.

Buy Your Tickets Online

To avoid the lines, you can buy your tickets ahead of time here: Maine Flower Show Tickets. This year, we included the price of parking in the tickets. Please also follow us on Facebook and RSVP to the event for timely updates. The show takes place at Thompson’s Point from March 21st-March 25th.

The Premiere Night

Premiere Night kicks off the festive four-day event by providing an exclusive first look at the talented participants whose attention-grabbing displays are highpoints of the show. Attendees get a sneak peek at the 2018 “Rooted in Maine” theme interpreted by masters in floral design, horticulture, and yardscaping. This year, they have incorporated Maine traditions, values, and resources into their stunning displays.

For more information about Premiere Night, check out the official Maine Flower Show Website.
